What is the Traditional Mass? A Recollection and Sung Mass

Ten years ago on this date, Summorum Pontificum - Pope Benedict XVI's historic decree liberating the traditional Roman Rite for celebration by all Latin Rite priests - came into force. Over those ten years, the number of regular Traditional Masses in the United States has grown from less than 200 to well over 500, increasingly celebrated by hundreds of young priests born well after its de facto disappearance in the 1960's. Join us in the Lourdes Chapel at the National Shrine (crypt level) for a reflection by one of these priests on what the Traditional Mass is, and what it means, ten years on.

The recollection will be preceded by a Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form, with chant by the schola of St. Francis de Sales, celebrating the ancient Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. "But it behooves us to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ: in Whom is our salvation, life, and resurrection: by Whom we are saved, and delivered." (Introit)

Lenten Recollection and Low Mass for Ember Friday in Lent, Friday, March 10, 2017

Juventutem DC is pleased to announce that we are hosting a Lenten Recollection in the Lourdes Chapel at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at 3:30 pm this coming Friday (March 10, 2017) by Fr. Andrew Royals, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Morganza. Before the Recollection, Fr. Royals will celebrate a Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite for Ember Friday of Lent. The talk and the Mass are free and open to the public. What better way to spend an hour or so of an Ember Day in Lent?  "And rend your hearts, and not your garments, and turn to the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, patient and rich in mercy, and ready to repent of the evil." (Joel 2:23)

Juventutem DC is the local chapter of the Foederatio Internationalis Juventutem. We are a group of Catholic young adults who seek to implement Summorum Pontificum in the Archdiocese of Washington. We love the traditional Roman liturgy and seek to share it with the Church and the world. #ComePrayWithUs!

RECOLLECTION: "THE ROSARY: MEDICATION AGAINST SPIRITUAL ALZHEIMER'S"

Recollection on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary - Friday, October 7, 2016 @4:00pm, Lourdes Chapel (Crypt Level), Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Juventutem DC is glad to announce a Recollection on the Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, "The Rosary: Medication Against Spiritual Alzheimer's," by Fr Lawrence Lew, O.P., of the Dominican Province of England. On this day 445 years ago, October 7, 1571, the Christian fleet of the Holy League won a decisive victory over the Ottoman armada at Lepanto, against heavy odds. At the very moment of the victory, the Dominican Pope St Pius V, accompanied by a large throng of faithful, was praying the Rosary in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. In gratitude, the Pope decreed that a feast of Our Lady be kept by the universal Church on October 7 in memory of Mary’s powerful intercession. Join us for this recollection to hear from Fr Lawrence on how the Rosary is an effective ‘medicine’ against  "Spiritual Alzheimer’s” both in our own lives and in our culture.

The Recollection will be preceded by a Low Mass in the traditional Dominican Rite. After the Mass, Fr. Lew will bless rosaries as well as roses according to the traditional Dominican ritual - an ancient tradition on this feast day. Bring either or both with you if you wish to take advantage of this blessing!

Fr Lawrence Lew, O.P. is a son of the Province of England, of the Order of Preachers. Fr Lawrence was ordained in 2011, and has served as assistant Catholic chaplain to Edinburgh University in Scotland. He is currently in his final year of studies for the Pontifical License in Sacred Theology, based at the Dominican House of Studies, before he returns to his Province to minister at the Dominicans’ Rosary Shrine in London. Fr Lawrence has been actively preaching online as a contributor to the New Liturgical Movement, and through his well-known photographs of sacred subjects (see his FlickrTumblr, and Twitter pages).

"The Roman Canon: We Don't Change It. It Changes Us."

Come join us for a Recollection in the 9th Anniversary Year of Summorum Pontificum - Following a Missa Cantata for the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

The motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, freeing the traditional Roman Rite for celebration by Latin Rite priests of the Church, was officially promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI on September 14, 2007. Join us as we mark nine years of this crucial moment in the liturgical life of the Church for a Sung Mass and a recollection by Fr. Brian Sanderfoot of the Archdiocese of Washington on the heart of the Roman Rite - the Roman Canon, arguably the oldest of all anaphoras of the ancient rites of the Church - and how, when we prayerfully engage it, it changes us.

The event is free to the public. For those interested, there will be a social afterward at the Brookland Pint. New and returning CUA (and other DC Area university) students are especially invited to join us!
